What dinner would be complete without a cup of coffee and dessert? Our readers chose the best of the bunch in these categories and the results are both somewhat surprising and somewhat expected.

With so many coffee shops around town it wasn’t surprising at all to see the sheer number of coffee shops nominated. With so many to choose from, one can imagine that traveling far from one’s home or business for coffee is simply not done. Favorites therefore, fell along neighborhood lines and the coffee shops there in. It’s doubtful anyone from Mugeodong would travel to Dong-Gu for a cup o’ joe or vice-versa. Coffee is where you get it. Having said that, however, there were some high votes, but no clear winner. Here are the “winners” of the best coffee in Ulsan:

Starbucks – 11.6%

Angel-in-Us – 10%

Beans Bins and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at 7% each

a great number of shops each at 2% or less each.

So, although Starbucks received more votes than any other coffee shop to say they are the best would be disingenuous. With no clear majority, there can be no winner. Instead, Ulsanonline.com proclaims the winner to be….Ulsan. Just a few short years ago, there were NO coffee shops in the city. There were only coffee machines spewing out instant coffee and DaBangs, spewing out girls on scooters to delivery a thermos of instant coffee. Everybody wins because we have coffee.

Dessert however, is more clear cut.

In the Ice Cream category the winners are:

Baskin Robbins – the Best in Ulsan garnering 54.5% of the vote.

ColdStone Creamery – takes a distant 2nd place with 27% of the votes.

And in the Dessert category, no clear majority winner emerged.

Su Eun Go Cafe with 27% of the votes

Bella di Notte at 18%.

Although it’s tough to declare a “Best Of Ulsan” winner without a majority but the big surprise is Su Eun Go Cafe. Having only been in business for a month – since just about the time we began our Best of Poll – she’s captured 27% of the vote while the next most popular, Italian restaurant Bella di Notte was at 18%. It will be interesting to see how well she does next year when a full year of feasting on her pies and pastries has made the citizens of Ulsan more fully aware of her special talents.

And finally, in the no-where-else-to-put-it category, is the Cat Cafe. There are a few of these specialty restaurant/coffee shops in Ulsan and our readers have overwhelmingly chosen :

Romantic Cat Cafe – Best of Ulsan in the cat cafe category. To get your love bank filled with all the furry felines you can feel, this is the place to be in Ulsan winning with 57% of the votes.

Arabic, Middle Eastern, Indian is where “Middle Earth” cuisines arise.

With only a few restaurants in Ulsan of these categories, the tallying was simple and straight-forward. And apparently, according to our readers, so are their choices. For the Indian/Pakistani variety of restaurants the winner is

Namaskar – voted the Best in Ulsan with a whopping 84% of the vote. Our readers did not specify, except in a single case, if the Samsandong or Shinae location was their preference.

Shalimar – a very distant second place with 12%. Shalimar is actually two distinct restaurants with different menus and owners, although the owners are brothers. Two distinct votes of the 12% went, one each to the Gottbawi Shalimar and Bangeojin Shalimar, the rest being unspecified as to which so we award both with an Honorable Mention.

In the Middle Eastern and Arabic styles, there are, again, just a few in the city. But our readers made their choices clear

Marhaban – a Moroccan restaurant and relatively newcomer to the Ulsan scene, was voted Best in Ulsan with 57%. With just a few months in business, that’s pretty remarkable and a testament to the quality of food they serve.

White House Traditional Turkish Restaurant - Honorable Mention with 35% of the vote.

Pizza and chicken, whether it’s take out or pickup. This is the fastfood category and not to be confused with sit down style restaurants that happens to serve chicken or pizza.

In just about every neighborhood in the city there are numerous delivery options. With so many options, it’s no wonder that our readers picked the best Pizza Delivery winners as follows:

Dominoes – 23% of our readers chose this as the best.

Mr. Pizza and Pizza Etang – both garnered 13.3% of the votes each

Pizza Palm – 10%

Pizza Maru – 6%

a smattering of others Pizza joints whose total votes amounted to over 50% of the total votes cast although none received more than 3% each.

Clear, no clear winner in the Pizza delivery category although some favorites have emerged.

In the Chicken Delivery category, results were equally scattered:

KyoCheon – received 19% of the votes.

GoobNae – 14.3%

BHC and Mexican – both outlets obtained 9.5% of the total

The other 48% of the votes were spread among a wide field, each getting a small percentage.

From these results, it seems clear that both Pizza and Chicken delivery is, like the best coffee poll, highly dependent on proximity. You’ll order from whoever is in your neighborhood.

What started as another “Ulsan Online Facebook Phenomena” the readers of Ulsan Online’s popular facebook page were anxiously waiting the arrival of this establishment. If there was one thing that Ulsan lacked it was a proper mexican restaurant. For years Ulsan people went to Seoul, Busan, Masan and Daegu to get their fix but the wait is now over. O’Taco is here and their menu is bursting with South-of-the-border goodness. That would be the American border in case you were confused…

Nice Views!! A great place to spend a weekend afternoon

O’Taco sits along the seaside road just down from Cocky Bar and across from Splash Bar in Bangeojin. While I was sort of annoyed that it was located in waaaay out in Bangeojin of all places, the seaside view and the outdoor patio quickly made me forget any notions of annoyance on this beautiful day. Looking out over the ocean made for a great lunch and I will totally be back to enjoy the views at night.

O’Taco is a chain, but one that I am not familiar with, but they are in Busan, Seoul and a few other places. Also, I am not going to get into whether or not this is “authentic Mexican” or “Tex-Mex” because frankly I am a Canadian that has lived here too long and I no longer know or care what the difference is, as long as it tastes good and is not filled with cabbage and thousand island dressing. What I will compare it to are the other restaurants that call themselves “Mexican” in Korea.

My yardstick for measuring any Mexican place is the burrito. So on this day, I ordered the chicken burrito to see how it stacked up against the likes of Gringo’s and Dos Tacos, two of the more recent burritos that I have had. Upon first bite you could taste the delicious spiced chicken and cilantro. the cheese was ample and definitely not “pizza cheese” like what most of us are forced to use ate home.

The chicken burrito was more of a wrapped taco than a burrito, so it was a little looser than what I would have liked it to be. Thus, eating was a bit of a sloppy affair and one that I am glad that I did alone. Had they tightly rolled it, this burrito would have gotten top scores. The other downfall was that it was a little on the saucy side, but only a little. Again, I like my burritos in a tightly rolled package. However, O’Taco still made a damn fine burrito loaded with flavor and deliciousness. Loosely packed or not, they still have me craving more and that is the main thing!

Great service and good grasp of English

Their menu is packed with loads of the expat favorites such as enchiladas, tacos and burritos of all flavors from shrimp to cheese and bean. There are lots of items to choose from and you can check out their extensive menu here. The staff recommends trying the enchilada and the nachos as they are popular in the Seoul location.

All in all, O’Taco will be a welcomed addition to the new breed of restaurants in Ulsan. The outdoor patio will be a real treat once the warmer weather arrives like it did today. On Friday there will be an opening event, as to the times and the details, at this time, they are unknown.

Price: Enchiladas 10,000 won, Burritos 8,000 won, Tacos 5,000 won

Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday, 11 am to 10 pm

It’s about a 5 minute walk from the bus stop.(HT to Hannah Rogers)

TO GET THERE:

Going south out of the Benchwarmers’ alley, turn left and walk just a block or two. It’s on your right. Or consult the helpful map on this page.

I heard at Bench that there’s a place that makes handmade hamburgers in Shinae. So after meeting some friends nearby, we set out to try their stuff. I was hoping for a thick, juicy grilled hamburger with a crispy bun and all the fixings. What I got was unexpected, but altogether welcome.

A full wall mural in black and white depicting a typical Korean street scene covers the left wall, and the plaid print plastic tablecloths complete the pseudo country home decor. They’ve got some little rag dolls on shelves and a stuffed toy bird in a plastic birdcage near the door, too, but I didn’t care about that.

The service was quick, and the waitress spoke functional English key phrases (“the wait for your order will be several minutes”, “would you like anything to drink”, and so on.) You can’t rush a good hamburger, and they certainly were. As they cooked, the smell of frying patties filled the restaurant from the open kitchen in back. Portion sizes were reasonable for the price, and for 10,000, two of the three options would make a good choice for lunch, dinner, or anytime during their open hours, 12-10pm.

So what’s on the plate? Like I said, there’s no English menu. But I can help you with that. All the items have konglish words, and if you point and grunt, you’ll get one of their three options. Note, these are really a choice of what sauce you want.

The meat itself, in any case, is hand-formed and pan-seared. A thick, juicy salisbury steak, peppered and spiced. Crisply seared on the outside, well-done, juicy and dripping inside. All the sets come with a genuine American-style dinner roll, a sesame-dressing salad, rice with a fried egg, and a simple miso soup, most of which are standard fare and not the reason I was there in any case.

My friend demanded that I extol the virtues of the humble dinner roll: a foreign delicacy not usually seen in Korea. The rolls with the set were flaky, warm, and buttery. Assuredly not cream-filled, sweet, made of sweet potato, or anything else you might expect to see here.

As I paid and left, I noticed something that might bring me back again: a loyalty card program. If you buy ten plates, you get the eleventh for free.

1. “Original” [오리지널...] A hit. Well-done, juicy and delicious. Covered in a perfect amount of the original sauce. The “Original” sauce tastes like a tomatoey, tangy salisbury sauce. Worth the money.

2. “Barbeque” [바베큐...] A miss. I can only assume the hamburger was as well-cooked as the first. It was hard to tell on account of how spicy this one is. It tastes like a freight train. Be warned, even if you like spicy food, the heat completely overpowers whatever other flavour the sauce might have had. It hurts to eat, and would leave anyone grabbing for the water.

3. “Cream” [마늘 크림...] An absolute hit. You’ll probably want this one. Just like the others, this had a delightfully crispy crust and a very juicy interior. The cream sauce tastes a lot like a peppery cream of mushroom soup. Poll results suggest that 3/3 of us thought this item was superior to the others.

Overall:

Service 8.5

Decor 8

Speed 7

Price $$ (10,000 won/set, drinks extra)

No dessert available.

More good Vietnamese is always welcome, and the latest place I’ve found in Seongnamdong is my new favorite of the bunch.

Thao Uyen sits on one of the main north-south streets, not far from Newcore Outlet or the other two Vietnamese joints. It’s authentic Vietnamese with no Korean frills attached. It’s so un-Korean that I’m not sure the guy who served me even speaks Korean, but more on that at the end.

Up a narrow flight of dingy stairs (always a good sign for an Asian restaurant in the US), Thao Uyen has a nice big dining room, a view to the street, and a ridiculously huge menu.

I wasn’t kidding. No translations are available, but if you stick any of these names into Google you’ll have no trouble. There’s lemongrass chicken, Vietnamese hot pot, banh mi, spring rolls, pho, other soups, noodle dishes, desserts, anything you’d want. I decided to go for my personal set to judge any Vietnamese restaurant; pho, spring rolls, and a banh mi thit.

Sriracha, hoisin, fish sauce, etc. The usual suspects.

First came pho. It’s great, flavorful, filled with cilantro and goodness. The first time I came here I got limes for it, this time only a lemon, but hey. They do have limes sometimes. They have all the tricks down too—the noodles come out slightly undercooked and finish in the broth, so they don’t get weird on you toward the end.

There is good pho around town; this is the most authentic I’ve had. Is it better than Pho Ban? It’s different, I’m not sure if it’s necessarily better but if you want the real thing, Thao Uyen is your place.

Next came the cha gio, stuffed with shredded pork.

Meaty goodness, and just imperfect enough that you know they actually made these. And great floating in your pho broth.

Now, you may notice I said I was getting a banh mi thit, and yet, there is no banh mi thit. Here is the only flaw of Thao Uyen, the service is not exactly with a smile. I don’t know if the guy who was serving me spoke a word of Korean because he refused to say anything. I wrote down what I wanted (since I am sure I can’t pronounce Vietnamese) and he was confused, eventually I had to point at the menu which I had copied from. He outright refused to serve me a banh mi. This is not unique, as the other two Vietnamese places in Seongnamdong have also refused me the honor of this glorious sandwich. One of these days I will get one, and my mission in life will be complete.

Personally, it doesn’t bother me. Putting up with bad/angry service to get amazing food just reminds me of Asian restaurants back in the US, but if you’re expecting to make some new friends this ain’t the place. But it’s so good and cheap. I am going to be going back frequently.

Also! They have a store!

Right upstairs from the restaurant is Asia Mart, filled with all kinds of Vietnamese goodies. The most exciting are in one of the fridges, where you can find… fresh limes. And fresh cilantro. Not even kidding. The limes are tiny, the cilantro is in generous bunches, and it’s right there! In Ulsan! Limes were five for 2,000 and one package of cilantro is also 2,000. If you’ve been needing these, now you have an option other than Gmarket.

Thao Uyen is located here: http://g.co/maps/bawc6 Since I couldn’t communicate I haven’t the slightest idea what their hours are, but both times I’ve been there were after 9 PM so they don’t close too early.

UPDATE: I went again today and was able to get a banh mi thit. It was amazing. The baguette they use for the sandwich was SO good, someone who speaks Korean well has to find out if they make their own and if they’ll start selling them. They’d make bank.

For years, Ulsanites have lamented the lack of decent pastry in this city. While there is a good bread and cake bakery in Seobudong, out near the old Foreigner’s compound, nowhere has been able to serve real pies and tarts. Paris Baguette’s pastries are notoriously over-baked well past the “golden” stage, and are often filled with sweet potato or sneaky-bean that just doesn’t satisfy the craving for a good slice of apple or key-lime pie.

Apple Pie!

Enter Sueungo Café, in Mugeodong.

Located on the main street, just across from the University main gate, towards the bus stop, this little basement café is full of charm and (more importantly) amazing pies and tarts.

Pumpkin Pie!

Su-Eun Go, the pastry chef, studied Baking and Pastry Art at the Culinary Institute of America, one of the top cooking schools in the world. She worked along side America’s best chef, Thomas Keller, in a Michelin 3-star restaurant in New York City, at the Salon de Thé in Paris, and the Singapore Hilton Hotel. She returned to Ulsan recently, because she wanted to be back with her family.

Su-Eun Go's uniform and certificate from the CIA.

Lucky us!

Sueungo Café offers a variety of temptations for those who are not counting their calories. When we were there, there was apple tart, pecan pie, pecan diamond (made with caramelized pecans), and pumpkin pie, but I ignored them all in favour of the chocolate cream pie with meringue.

Chocolate Cream Meringue Pie

The chocolate cream was rich, but not overly sweet, the flaky crust was lined with dark chocolate, and the whole creation was topped off by a sweet meringue baked in perfect peaks. It was absolutely divine. I washed it down with a strawberry smoothie, topped with real cream.

My partner in crime had arrived in need of a proper meal, so he went in favour of one of the brunch sets, which are conveniently served all day. On offer are Maple French Toast, Buttermilk Pancakes, Honey Bread and Cheesy Garlic Bread, but as he was seeking something savoury, he chose the Croque Madame. This French classic is a hot sandwich made with thick slices of homemade bread, Emmental (Swiss) cheese, and ham, smothered in a rich, creamy béchamel sauce, and topped off with a fried egg. To say it was tasty doesn’t do it justice. The set comes with a cup of good coffee, too.

Croque Madame

The interior of the café is comfy and chic, with tables and a few booths. The menu is written only in Hangeul, but it’s all Konglish, so it’s easy to puzzle out what you want (just bring your handy guide to reading Hangeul). Basically, they serve various styles of coffee, green tea or sweet potato lattes, lemonade, smoothies, and Marco Polo tea, which smells incredible (but it was too late for me to be drinking caffeinated tea), along with the food mentioned above.

The café is open from 8:30am to 9pm, Mon-Fri, and 9am to 8:30pm Sat and Sun. They’re closed the first and third Sunday of each month.

The Menu

Ashley American Grill & Salad is a self-service buffet restaurant situated on the eighth floor of the decadent Newcore Outlet building, which is located a few blocks from the Hyundai Department Store in Samsandong, in the direction of Lotte Mart.

If you go there for dinner on a Saturday evening, as I did, the chances are that you’ll be asked for your name and you may be waiting up to twenty minutes for a free table. In retrospect we were told twenty minutes, but in reality we were seated between 10-15 minutes of registering our names.

There are several comfortable benches to sit on outside the reception counter if you do find yourself waiting. Plus, you’re in the Newcore Outlet, so you could wander around the eighth floor to take a gander at the other restaurants nearby, or even further afield to the department stores on the other floors. The area is far from cramped, so you will not be uncomfortable while you wait.

Inside you will find two main sections to the restaurant – three main dining areas and the kitchen/self-service area.

The rose patterned tablecloths in the dining area may look like your grandmother’s curtains, and the yellow wallpaper does lend the dining area a certain 1950’s living room feel. On the walls you will see framed wall calendars from different years in history.

Ashley American Grill & Salad appears to be marketing itself as a mid-range dining experience. It’s a budget restaurant by all accounts, not promising Michelin-star cuisine yet offering a wide range of salads and soups with interesting and never-before-seen combinations, such as the Carbonara Ddokboki for example, which I found delicious. It’s here that you can also find potato wedges – a rare occurrence in restaurants here in Korea.

For 12500 won per head you can eat handsomely, taking as many return trips to the self-service area as you see fit.

Alternatively, you can order the steak, but that’s going to set you back 41000 or 47000 won depending on which size you opt for. If you stick with the salad bar then you can pick up some garlic fried chicken and also some slices of pork, so carnivores won’t be disappointed.

The primary self-service area is split into different sections. First along the row at the starting point is the Soup section. Grab a bowl and pour yourself a dollop of mushroom, broccoli, Japanese soybean or curried soup.

Then comes the Spaghetti section. Watch out for the spicy garlic spaghetti. It must be loaded with red chilli paste because not only did it blow my head off, it contaminated many other non-spicy items on my plate at the merest physical contact!

You will next find the Mixed Salads counter. These are very typically western in style, including chicken and broccoli salad, mango and cucumber salad and the aforementioned carbonara ddokboki. You can make your own salad here, with six dressings to choose from.

Imagine my delight when I discovered the presence of green grapes! The variety of seedless green grapes that we are familiar with in our homelands.

Don’t get me wrong – I love Korean purple grapes. We all know it’s a little tedious having to spit out 5 or 6 tiny seeds with each single grape (and, in my case, the skin too), but the flavour is so good. And anything grape flavoured, such as the yoghurts, or grape juice here, is superb. But it was refreshing to taste green grapes for the first time in eight months.

The penultimate section is the Green & Fruit counter. Help yourself to fresh pineapple, apple and oranges. At the final counter, the Dessert section, I took some chocolate cake and some cheesecake. Also in the dessert section, which was particularly unorthodox, was garlic bread and nacho chips with nacho meat paste.

One of the attractions of the salad bar is the proximity to the chefs and that you can practically watch them cook all the food as you serve yourself some of the current batch.

And that’s not all. In the centre of the self-serve area there is a large bay in the centre which offers the facility to make your own bibimbap or janchiguksu. Everything is laid out there for you.

Drinks are included within the 12500 won per head fee, and of course you can help yourself to as many refills as you desire.

If your stomach is not entirely satisfied after all of this, then grab a scoop and serve yourself some blueberry or vanilla sherbet.

Due to the atmosphere, the style and range of food, and taking in the customer demographics on that Saturday night, I had the distinct impression that Ashley American Grill & Salad is a popular choice for Korean families to treat themselves to dinner.

There were many children present, and judging from the wide grins on their tiny faces the self-service style was the greatest novelty for them.

Ashley American Grill & Salad is excellent value for money. For 12500 won you can really go to town and fill yourself with several plates of food. A couple can be completely satisfied for a total of 25000 won.

As you exit Ashley American Grill & Salad you will notice that for 6900 won you can grab yourself a bucket of garlic fried chicken for take out. You shouldn’t need to, after an all-you-can-eat buffet, but it’s a nice touch on the restaurant’s part.

When you ask foreigners what kinds of Korean foods they like 90% will probably come up with bulgogi or samgyupsal, if they are not vegetarian. However, Korean stew will be on that list somewhere, but it is not something that most foreigners would actively seek out when they are hungry. It could be that most of us come from a sort of “meat and potatoes” culture and the idea of a stew as a main dish is not something that we’d want to go out and pay money for.

Recently, I wandered into the Sae Ma Ul Shik Dang in Mugeo with my wife for lunch. We were craving something a little spicy but didn’t feel like a greasy meat dish. So we ordered a bowl of their famous “7-minute Kimchi Chi-gae” and a bowl of pork dwaenjang chi-gae. We were both expecting the usual Korean lunch which is good but nothing to write home about. However, when the food arrived, we were blown away.

Now, this chain of restaurants is quite famous, having been on numerous tv shows and showcased on “The Kimchi Chronicles”. Its unique yellow color roof with old style writing gives you a sort of 70′s vibe and the interior is what you’d expect. Nothing fancy just down to business of making your food amazing.

For 5,500 you will get a big bowl of rice, side dishes and the best stew you’ll eat in Korea. Your school’s cafeteria ain’t got nothin’ on these guys. The famous kimchi chi-gae is what I would start out with. It is not too fishy and has huge chunks of meat and kimchi. The flavor is almost sweet at times and totally makes you want clean your bowl.

If kimchi is not to your liking then their pork dwaenjang chigae will be more your style. Again, they’ve managed to bring out some amazing flavor without adding too much dwaenjang to make it smell and taste like an old sweat sock. It is just perfect and amazingly hearty. These flavors will keep you coming back again and again. They also serve some amazing meat dishes and their thin-sliced pork is great.

I have visited two of the four Ulsan locations and found that they cook a little bit differently. The mugeo-dong location, right beside the Wa Bar on the main drag near the University, has a better dwaengjang chi-gae. However, the Samsan location, across from Trevi and next to the new Holly’s Coffee, has a better kimchi chi-gae. However, both these dishes are game changers if you are on the fence about Korean food.

If you are looking for a good hearty lunch that will leave you feeling fully and supremely satisfied, then I truly recommend Sae Ma Ul Shik Dang.

Ulsan legend known to most as “Dr. Im” has added to his already impressive resume with his latest venture, Cafe La Nuit, an elegant yet comfortable fine dining establishment tucked away on a side street in Samsandong.

On the evening that I was invited there to try this restaurant for the first time, I was met warmly by the good doctor and shown into his stylish, yet comfortable establishment. Upon entering you immediately feel a touch of class and the time just seems to melt away.

For me, this was a great experience for not only the food but for the experience of eating in a place that felt authentic. Not in the way that they were trying to reinvent a classic french cafe or anything but in the way that it just felt so natural. Think the complete opposite of a place like Outback.

You could feel Dr. Im’s dreams come true once the food started to arrive. It was top quality all the way through. If you are a steak lover then this is a place that you should not miss out on for all of his steaks are butchered the very day that you order them. Thus making a reservation is a must.

The chefs at cafe la nuit are as interesting as they are talented. Both hailing from Korea, they have a mix of styles and experience. The steaks and pasta taste amazing! Now, if you are thinking that this is going to cost you an arm and a leg, think again.

Dishes start at around 12,000 won for a delicious green salad and go up to 43,000 won for the premium Korean streak. If you compare that to 90,000 won steak that I saw at VIPS the other night, then I would say that the prices are reasonable.

The wine list has both French and Spanish wines and again are reasonably priced between 22,000 won and 45,000 won. You’ll spend more than your average night at a galbi-jib but you will most likely eat the best steak in the city.

The house specialty is steak and what better to go with steak then wine. Both chefs are trained sommelier(s) and have carefully chosen a great wine list for you to choose from. That means that you are always going to get the perfect wine pairing with your meal. If you have a bottle kicking around home, don’t be shy. You can bring it with you and open it up free of charge!

One should not pass up the pasta either. If a thick cut of the best steak that you’ll ever eat, is not up to your liking, then how about a bowl the most delicious pasta you’ll ever have?

Everything in Cafe La Nuit is quality and made to perfection. After having so much good food and really not wanting to leave the comfortable atmosphere at all, I was served a cup of cafe luwak. Yes, that is right! a cup of the fabled “world’s most expensive coffee” made from the belly of an idonesian toddy cat or “civet” It was the perfect way to end the evening. Espresso is also available.

Cafe La Nuit is located in Samsan Dong just off of the infamous “Hogwan Street” that would be the major road running about a few blocks down from hyundai department store.

The best way to get to Cafe La Nuit is to find Hivel Hogwan/YES hogwan and cross the street towards the Ja-yeon Dream Co-op. Walk past it to the next little intersection and take a left. You immediately see the bright yellow awning. That is the Cafe La Nuit.
