Kebapistan – A Turkish Delight

Kebapistan first opened in Busan in a tiny corner restaurant, a hole-in-the-wall style take-out joint. Owned and run by Mehmet Yilmaz, a great restauranteur. There are now three Kebapistans, and we are luck enough to have the best one here Samsandong, the heart of Ulsan. The others are located in the Busan University district next to Coffee Bean and the third is in Geoje Island (more information available at Kebapistan).

Chicken Kebab...oh yeah

The only Turkish restaurant in Ulsan, Kebapistan features an open kitchen, where you can watch your food being made. There are 8-10 items on the menu, ranging from 8500 to a family meal in the 30 000s. The food is absolutely fantastic. I’ve tried everything on the menu a few times, and have never had a bad meal. Though I love lamb, I’d have to say that the single best dish on the menu is the Chicken Kebap. The marinating sauce has made the most mouth watering creation in town (and it comes on tiny swords which are useful if you are attacked by Brad Pitt and the Greeks while eating).

Falafel...Humus...mmm

There are the standard dishes, like falafel, humus and Turkish bread. I end up ordering all three, everytime I go, which adds to the price of the meal, but is sooo worth it! And, if the restaurant isn’t too busy, and nobody is looking, you can lick the humus plate (Don’t tell ANYBODY).

The restaurant is luxuriously styled, with an excellent upper-class feeling. The service is good, and the location is central.  The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner almost everyday of the year, and reservations are possible (and not a bad idea on a weekend).  052-265-2222. There is also the secret take-out menu. Though the restaurant has grown from a take-away to fine-dining, the original purpose is still there, and you can get the kebap roll take-away for only 3500 won (chicken) which is cheaper and much, much better than any of the fast food options in town.

Kebapistan is located on the second floor of the building kitty-corner to Samsan McDonalds. The building’s entrance is located directly infront of the Hyundai Department Store Starbucks. There are two buildings, take the left side. There is a shoe store in the entrance to the building, and a jewelry shop on the corner. It is not the building with the Pharmacy in it. Luckily, it is well sign posted, and we have a map. To get there in a taxi, say “Hyundai Beck-hwa-jum” (sounds like Breakfast jam).

This site is AWESOME! I just found a few more restaurants that I want to visit here in Ulsan. And a “few more” about doubles my possibilities.

Who’s running this site? I have a couple restuarants that I’d like to share as well.
